AC/DC - Sink The Pink
The Album: Fly on the Wall (1985)
One of the more forgettable AC/DC albums, Fly on the Wall came across rather uninspired but really suffered from a production that minimized the band's considerable power and showered vocalist Brian Johnson's voice in an annoying and grating reverb bath. Fly's predecessor, Flick of the Switch is an under-rated classic. The follow-up, Blow up Your Video, didn't do much to rectify the band's slip in quality but did successfully cross-over into MTV playlists.
Grade: 6.8/10
The Song: Sink The Pink (video released 1986)
I rather like this song. Cool riffage with the plucked double stop figure (For Those About To Rock technique). The most enjoyable element is the chorus lyrics which sound like a toast from some twisted aristocracy.
Sink the pink, it's all the fashion
Drink the drink, it's old fashioned
Gimme water, gimme wine
Gonna show you, a good time
Sink the pink, sink the pink
Grade: 7.7/10
The Video Shame
The band: No shenanigans here by brothers Young and crew like in You Shook Me All Nigh Long. Too bad. Instead, they are forced to operate on a tiny stage in a pool hall. Rather unbecoming especially in light of how coked-out and frenetic Angus and Malcom seem to be. The stage can barely contain them and its not a good look in this instance. Me thinks the green room was dusted with white powder on this shoot. At least they look enthusiastic.
The woman: In a pink caddy, up drives "Suzy Cue". Yikes! This is where the shameful hilarity lies. We get treated to a couple of rather ungainly and uncoordinated legs walking in the pool hall. Clearly we are made to think this will be some hot bad ass chick. No. no. no. Not attractive. Some of the ugliest hands I've seen on a woman is the second impression delivered. Of course all of the pool scum is suitably aroused at her entrance, including guy in white t-shirt (who'd be obviously gaaaay in any other decade) and a super annoying and disgusting cartoon fly, who probably spends its day at the pool hall rolling around in the gum and boogers stuck under the tables. Suzy Cue looks a little like Elaine in the Airplane movies and quite a bit like Kristen Wiig but with a hairstyle not unlike Bram Stoker's Dracula. Good Lord, that pink vinyl outfit she is wearing...gag us with a spoon, 1986!
The Shameful Glory: At the 2:41 minute mark, "it" begins to "dance", pink pool cue acting as a momentary stiletto. It is a full-body heave of a dance that should have left everyone, including that filthy fly fully neutered. Maybe the most confusing but entertaining move is at 3:04 where she throws a leg up on white t-shirt guy's shoulder and then awkwardly shakes his hand. What the hell? Then they move in to kiss and dance closely.
Shameful Entertainment Value Grade: 8/10
Suzy Cue was a treat to watch but the fly deducted a point or two for me. Need a bath after watching him.
